It seems that former Raptors forward/center Andrea Bargnani cannot catch a break these days. After a frustrating season with two separate elbow injuries, Bargnani finally was cleared to practice at the beginning of June. The subsequent trade to the Knicks provided a much needed change of scenery and a fresh start for the career of the former number one overall NBA draft pick.
Bargnani went from a warm welcome with the Knicks organization to practicing with his National Team in Italy where he was badly needed if the Italians were to have any success this September at the 2013 Eurobasket. Italy’s other big NBA star is the Nuggets Danilo Gallinari who has a partially torn ACL and is not expected to play before December.
Bargnani has a respiratory tract infection and is expected to miss at least the start of Eurobasket, although nothing is certain at the moment according to a report by Sportando.net.
While there remains hope that Bargnani could return later in the tournament, the illness will affect his ability to train in August and possibly longer. The concern in New York will be about Bargnani’s physical conditioning when he arrives for training camp at the start of October and whether this illness will set him back at the start of the NBA season.
