The Canadians took a 39-33 lead into the half, but couldn’t hold on as Italy went on an 11-0 run to start the third quarter and never relinquished the lead.

The Spurs Cory Joseph had a big game scoring 16 points on 6-10 shooting from the field and the Celtics Kelly Olynyk contributed 13 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Luigi Datome led Italy with 22 points.

Italia Basketball reports,

Italy beat Canada 74-71 in the first match of the tournament in Trieste. For the Azzurri coach Pianigiani it is the ninth win in ten games played this summer, the sixth in a row.

“It ‘was a tough match for us,” said Pianigiani. “At the beginning we had to even out their aggression and their athleticism. We went a bit anxious to have paid too many mistakes that made us lose confidence. This is a group that keeps us who needs to feed itself and its confidence. The positive aspect of this evening, in addition to the victory, it was the desire to catch up with the defense and with the right face in the second half. A final point to another point that I hope give us even greater confidence in our own abilities. We’re not a team that can give 20 points to the opponents but if we get to next year until the end we always have our say.”

This was the third loss in three days for Team Canada and the Canadians will face Serbia in Trieste on Monday.
