France defeated Lithuania 80-66 to win their first ever European Championship and the Spurs Tony Parker won the 2013 Eurobasket MVP.
France got off to a fast start behind the hot shooting of the Trail Blazers Nicolas Batum who had 17 points on 6-7 shooting and finished the game on the strong play of Boris Diaw who had 15 points. Batum didn’t score in the second half.
MVP Parker only had 4 points on 2-7 shooting in the first half, but finished with 12 points on 4-6 shooting in the second half, however, France didn’t need a heroic effort from their point guard to win this game. France dominated Lithuania on the boards 42-25 to control almost every aspect of what happened on the court. Parker was also named to the All-Tournament team.
Linas Kleiza led Lithuania with 20 points, but he only had 4 points in the second half. Kleiza was named to the All-Tournament team after the game. Mantas Kalnietis scored 19 points for Lithuania in the loss.
Lithuania didn’t collect a single offensive rebound in this game until Head Coach Jonas Kazlauskas subbed in Jonas Valanciunas with 7:25 left to go in the fourth quarter. Kazlauskas had only played Valanciunas for 3.5 frantic minutes in the second quarter before this. Valanciunas collected 3 rebounds and 2 blocked shots in the fourth quarter, but the game was well out of hand at that point.
It was a great team effort from France throughout the game. France had the normally strong Lithuanian defense in disarray and out hustled their opponent for rebounds and loose balls to earn the victory.
France defeated host country Slovenia and arch-rival Spain on their way to the Gold.
