Kelly Olynyk Gains Experience In 78-73 Loss To Serbia

The Boston Celtics Kelly Olynyk had a big game for Team Canada in Trieste Italy as Serbia showed the Canadians how it’s done winning 78-73.

The 23-year-old 7′ Olynyk had 11 points, a game high 9 rebounds and 4 assists in 22.5 minutes off the bench, but he also had a game high 6 turnovers and Canada just couldn’t look after the ball and surrendered 19 points on 22 turnovers during the game.

The game was close, however, Serbia was in control most of the way taking a 5-point lead into the half before scoring guard Brady Heslip took over for a stretch. A personal 7-0 run by Heslip to start the third quarter gave Canada the lead and this game was nip and tuck for the next 7 minutes with the lead changing hands or tied. From there Serbia closed out the quarter on an 10-2 run to re-establish control and take an 8-point lead into the fourth quarter.

Olynyk re-entered the game to start the fourth quarter and made a huge impact grabbing a steal, scoring the first two points, hauling in a couple of boards and blocking a shot as Canada closed back to within 4 points. Olynyk also picked up a couple of fouls and turned the ball over twice before Head coach Jay Triano did his now standard 5-man substitution pattern with 5 minutes remaining in the quarter.

Two quick turnovers following Triano’s 5-man substitution helped Serbia complete an 8-0 run to go up 71-59 and coast in for the victory.

Heslip led Canada in scoring with 18 points on 4-11 three-pointers, Olynyk and Ejim had 11 points and Magic forward Andrew Nicholson chipped in with 10 points.

Bogdanovic led Serbia with 19 points.

Turnovers and missed free throws proved to be the undoing of the Canadians. Canada had 7 more turnovers and gave up 7 more points off of turnovers than Serbia. They also shot 12-18 from the free throw line while Serbia cashed-in with 14-16 from the charity stripe.

Canada plays Bosnia in their final game in Trieste on Tuesday before heading to Spain.
