Raptors Jonas Valanciunas Makes Common Error In Judgement

This situation isn’t one to make light of, but the Toronto Raptors Jonas Valanciunas made an all too common error in judgement for a young man enjoying a couple of days off.  It has been widely reported that Valanciunas has been charged with an alcohol related driving offense after he was spotted with open beer bottles in his car as he went through a drive thru.

Valanciunas and the Raptors have since issued press releases about the incident.

Team Statement:

We were made aware this morning of the incident involving Jonas Valanciunas and are disappointed he has put himself in this situation. We take this matter very seriously as we have the highest expectations for all members of our organization.

At this time we are continuing to gather information and we will comment further when appropriate.

Player Statement:

I hold myself to a high standard and take my role as a member of the Toronto Raptors very seriously. I apologize to the organization, my teammates, my family and my fans, and regret any negativity this incident has brought upon them.

It is important not to get ahead of the situation and speculate about what will happen to Valanciunas or the Raptors as a result of the incident. It is not unusual for it to take a year before charges are resolved one way or another and the NBA typically doesn’t react until then. This should not have any impact on the Raptors playoff chances.

If convicted, alcohol related driving offenses usually result in a 1 or 2 game suspension by the league, however, no matter what happens, the hope should be that Valanciunas learns from his experience and doesn’t put himself in this situation again.
