On the last scheduled day of pre-draft workouts at the Air Canada Centre, Toronto’s own Stanford Senior Dwight Powell arrived for a dream come true workout with the Raptors.
Dwight Powell audio:
“This is definitely a dream come true for me,” Powell said. “For a long time to workout for the Raptors and be in this gym in a playing capacity has been a dream of mine for a long time and it is a lot of kids dreams in this city.”
The 6’11 power forward is expected to be drafted in the second round on Thursday night. Powell had a breakout year as a Junior averaging 14.9 points, 8.4 rebounds and 45.5 percent shooting from three-point range, but he failed to maintain those numbers as a Senior and will likely be drafted later this year than if he had come out in 2013. However, Powell has no regrets as he values graduating from Stanford.
“I have my college degree which is something very valuable to me and I think is something important that people should pursue,” Powell said. “I wouldn’t say it was necessarily a tough call (to go back) because I value education. It is something my Mom instilled in me at a very young age is the value of getting your college degree and especially at a school like Stanford where there are so many opportunities when you have that degree in your possession.”
