Toronto Raptors center Jonas Valanciunas is playing for Lithuania at Eurobasket 2015 and he posted a double-double as his team eked out a 69-68 win in their tournament opener over the Ukraine.
Veteran Lithuanian forward Paulius Jankunas led all scorers with 22 points has he stretched the floor hitting on 3-4 three-point attempts, but this game turned into a battle between Valanciunas and the Ukraine’s big man Kyrylo Fesenko with each player finishing with 19 points and 11 rebounds as described by FIBA.
the 2013 runners-up (Lithuania) came up against an inspired Kyrylo Fesenko, who went toe-to-toe with NBA star and headline act Jonas Valanciunas, driving his team on in the process. The pair went for 19 points and 11 rebounds each in a back-and-forth tussle, as both showed off an array of post moves and emphatic finishes.
“I thought it was a great battle, a clash of the titans,” the 28-year-old (Fesenko) said of his encounter with Valanciunas.
“For us, the biggest problem was that we didn’t play as a team, every one of us was trying to score, to beat the opponent on our own and this was a big problem” – Lithuania head coach Jonas Kazlauskas.
