It wasn’t the usual diet of Anthony Davis and Kenneth Faried that carried Team USA past Mexico as the Golden State Warriors Splash Brothers Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson filled the nets from long range to secure the 86-63 win.
The US thwarted everyone on Mexico from scoring except the Hawks free agent big man Gustavo Ayon. Ayon led all scorers in this game with 25 points on 11-19 shooting to go with 8 boards, 2 steals and a block, but Mexico only scored 38 points through three-quarters and never had a chance in this contest.
Curry, on the other hand, had his first big game of the tournament going 6-9 from deep for 20 points and his Golden State teammate Thompson scored 15 points on 3-9 three-point attempts. The USA knew they would need the scoring and the chemistry from this pairing as the paint often gets a lot more congested against the better teams at this world championship tournament. Overall, team USA shot 13-29 from the three-point line against Mexico to secure this victory.
