Dan Tolzman Named Raptors 905 GM

Toronto Raptors Director of Scouting Dan Tolzman has been named as the new NBA D-League Raptors 905 General Manager. Raptors Assistant Coach Jesse Mermuys has been named Raptors 905 Head Coach and Assistant General Manager.

Tolzman is the guy providing the media with those great insights into the Raptors visiting rookie prospects every June.

Note: it appears Tolzman has also acquired a new title with the Raptors, director, player personnel.

Raptors 905, the NBA Development League affiliate of the Toronto Raptors, announced Tuesday it has named Dan Tolzman as general manager and Jesse Mermuys (MER-miss) as head coach/assistant general manager. Per team policy, terms of the agreements were not disclosed.
 
“We are pleased to announce Dan and Jesse as our first hires with Raptors 905,” said Raptors President and General Manager Masai Ujiri. “We feel it is important to have people from our system in charge to assist with a smooth transition as we start this new program.
 
“Both are eager for this challenge and committed to the development of our players.”
 
Tolzman will continue in his role as director, player personnel for the Raptors in addition to his new position with Raptors 905. As the club’s general manager, Tolzman will oversee all basketball operations and player personnel matters, including roster management and development, player transactions, scouting and drafting.
 
“Dan’s background in scouting has prepared him well for the opportunity to mold and develop a youthful roster,” added Ujiri.
 
“I’m honoured to have been named the first GM of Raptors 905,” said Tolzman. “The NBA D-League is all about development, and I look forward to using this opportunity to develop in my career while building and maintaining a competitive roster of young up-and-coming players.
 
“The benefits of owning a D-League team will be tremendous for the players and staff of the Raptors organization for years to come.”
 
Tolzman joined the Raptors in 2013. He began his basketball operations career in the NBA with the Denver Nuggets, serving as the team’s scouting coordinator from 2011-13. A native of Tucson, Arizona, Tolzman is a graduate of the University of Minnesota-Morris.
 
Mermuys has been an assistant coach with the Raptors since 2013 following stops in Houston and Denver. He has an extensive background in player development and will be the Raptors’ NBA Summer League coach for a second consecutive season.
 
“This is a step on Jesse’s path to becoming an NBA head coach,” said Ujiri. “We have seen first-hand his ability to develop our players and are excited to have him lead our D-League program.”
 
“I am extremely excited for the responsibility of developing and helping our young players reach their full potential” said Mermuys. “The opportunity to assist the organization, fulfill my passion for player development while strengthening my leadership skills through head coaching experience is a valuable prospect.
 
“My family and I are extremely grateful to the organization and ready to help build Raptors 905 from the ground up.”
 
Mermuys spent the 2012-13 season with the Houston Rockets as assistant coach/director of player development. Prior to that, he was with the Denver Nuggets for four seasons, serving as video coordinator, advance scout and assistant coach/advance scout.
 
A graduate of the University of Arizona, Mermuys was director of basketball operations for the Wildcats from 2006-08. He also worked at the collegiate level as video coordinator at New Mexico State and assistant coach at Southern Utah.
 
Per D-League policy, all coaching contracts are subject to League approval.
